Budget & exchange

Indonesian Rupiah: the rupiah (IDR)

  • Check this website to follow daily exchange rates: http://www.xe.com
Euros and dollars are accepted and can be exchanged for local currency without any problem at the airport and in the many exchange offices on the island. The cost of an average meal in Java: between €3 and €8.

  • You will find ATMs mainly in large cities; it is preferable to use machines located in banks, as they are more secure. Bring cash in case you travel to Karimunjawa. ATMs allow you to withdraw rupiah, which will simplify purchases on site. Each withdrawal is limited to around €100, but you can make several withdrawals in succession.
  • Purchases: Handicrafts can be bought locally, with awareness of protecting animal and plant species. In general, travelers should avoid taking advantage of vulnerable populations selling traditional objects or items that are part of the country’s heritage (unless made specifically for tourists). The CITES agreements – designed to protect over 2,500 animal species and 30,000 plant species – prohibit the trade of skins, ivory, scales, corals, shells, as well as the import of live exotic animals.

Tips

Tipping is not mandatory and is left to individual discretion. However, in Indonesia, it is customary to leave a tip if you are satisfied with the service provided.
The amount depends on your assessment of the service and should take the local economy into account. Excessive tips, considering the general standard of living in the country, can disrupt local economic balances.

An amount of €3 to €5 per person per day, to be split between the guide and driver, is standard.

As a reminder, tipping is an additional gesture and does not replace their regular compensation. All personnel involved in our trips are already paid for their services.

Sustainable tourism

Altaï Travel works towards more responsible tourism and follows a travel organization approach that respects fair and sustainable principles

Harmonizing practices ensures

  • A fair distribution of economic benefits

  • Informing travelers about respecting local populations and the environment and collecting their feedback upon return

Adopt simple actions during your travels and contribute to responsible tourism
  • Avoid leaving waste behind: dispose of it in bins or take it with you
  • Use drinking water sparingly (prefer showers over baths and report leaks) and avoid wasting it (prefer biodegradable soaps for washing, etc.)
  • Avoid damaging cultural sites: do not touch statues, do not move stones or objects, etc.
  • Prefer exchanges over gifts (gifts that are too valuable compared to the local standard of living can destabilize the local economy)
  • When walking, especially in fragile ecosystems, observe wildlife from a distance, stay on trails, limit trampling, and do not take “souvenirs”: refrain from picking rare flowers or collecting fossils
  • In some hotels, individual air conditioning is available. It is strongly recommended to turn it off whenever you are not in the room to avoid energy overconsumption and greenhouse gas emissions
